"School Nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students.  To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self management, self advocacy, and learning". 

This definition was adopted at the NASN Board of Directors meeting in Providence, Rhode Island in June 1999.

SHOULD I KEEP MY CHILD AT HOME?

The following guidelines should be used to help determine when your child should stay home from school due to illness.

  • Fever of 100 degrees or higher in PAST 24 HOURS
  • Vomiting and/or Diarrhea in PAST 24 HOURS
  • Itchy, red eyes with discharge
  • Unknown rash
  • Ringworm(until treatment started)
  • Headlice or Nits
  • Jaundice

To protect your child at school, students that are assessed with any of the signs and symptoms listed above will be sent home.
