Dress and Grooming

Brock ISD believes that the business of the school district is student learning and that school dress and grooming standards should support that purpose, as well as promote a safe, orderly learning environment. The dress and grooming of students should reflect the serious intent of one who is going to work with an important job to do.

Each student and parent shall be responsible for ensuring compliance with all aspects of guidelines when the student enters the school premises, and during the time the student is on school premises during the regular school hours. Parents and students will be held accountable for all information listed in the policy.

Campus Administrators have the authority to make final determinations as to whether clothing or grooming is or is not within BISD Guidelines. If the campus administration determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates guidelines, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. 

Dress and Grooming Guidelines

1) Students are not allowed to wear: 
          a. items that are lewd, offensive, vulgar, obscene, or depict sexual innuendo, or 
          b. items that advertise or depict tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any
              other substances prohibited under FNCF(L).
 
2) Student’s clothing shall adhere to the following guidelines:
 
 Shirts/Top
Shirts must cover to the point of the shoulder. 
No half-length, tank top, strapless, backless, cut-off, halter, or bare-midriff
         shirts/blouses shall be worn. Shirts that show the bare midriff when the student’s
         hands are extended above the head are not permitted. 
No sheer or see-through garments will be permitted unless worn over a shirt that  meets dress code guidelines. Low cut blouses, tops, sweaters, etc. with plunging necklines that expose undergarments and/or cleavage are not allowed. Undergarments must be completely covered at all times. 
PK-5th grade: Tank Tops are permitted with straps that are at least the width of 2 fingers.

      B.  Pants/Shorts 
Pants and shorts must be worn at the natural waistline. Belts must be worn if pants will not stay at the natural waistline. Exposure of undergarments is unacceptable.            
Shorts must be no shorter than the length of the student’s middle knuckle when arms are relaxed at the student’s sides and must completely cover the student’s buttock area.  Shorts must also have a hem - no cut-off shorts are allowed. 
Cut-outs or holes in pants/shorts or slits in skirts must be no higher than the length of the student’s middle knuckle when arms are relaxed at the student’s sides. Tape and/or other materials other than a permanent patch will NOT be used as a means to correct this problem. Cut-off shorts will not be permitted. 
Form-fitting/skin tight pants, such as leggings, yoga pants, and tights, may be worn under a dress, skirt, shorts, or shirt, as long the covering item, in both front and back, extends to at least the middle of the knuckles when arms are relaxed and at the student’s side. 
Athletic shorts must follow dress code regulations except during athletic periods or activities as approved by coaches and/or the campus principal.

     C. Dresses and/or skirts are permissible provided that the length of the garment, front and  
     back, is at least to the middle of the knuckles when arms are relaxed and at the student’s  
     sides. Undergarments must not be exposed at any time.

3) Clothing normally considered as undergarments, pajamas and/or sleepwear is not acceptable
    as school attire. Blankets are not permitted.

4) Shoes, boots, or sandals are to be worn. House shoes/slippers may not be worn. Steel-toed
    boots, cleats, skates, shoes with rollers, spikes, taps, and/or boots or shoes with sharp studs
    are not allowed.

5) No hats, sunglasses or head coverings (i.e., scarves, bandanas, hoodies) of any kind are to
    be worn in the buildings unless approved by the principal for a special occasion or for
    religious reasons.

6) No “chains” (including wallet chains) are allowed. 

7) Student’s hair, by the nature of the style or color, shall not tend to create an educational
    distraction. Student’s hair must be a natural color or shade. Examples of colors not
    permitted, but not limited to, are pink, green, blue, etc. Distracting styles such as mohawks or    
    liberty spikes will not be allowed.   

8) Boys shall not wear: 
          a. any visible body piercing such as earrings, nose rings or studs.. 
          b. hair shall be neat, clean, and well groomed, and not obstruct the student’s vision or
              view of the student’s face. 
          c. facial hair and sideburns must not extend below the earlobes. 
  
  9) Girls shall not wear any visible body piercing other than the ears. Nose rings or studs are
       not permitted. 

 10) The wearing of tongue rings or studs, facial jewelry, or facial decorations other than normal
       makeup is not permitted.  Spikes, gauges, and mouth jewelry are not allowed. Bandages,
       tape, spacers or other coverings used for the express purpose of covering body piercing
       jewelry will not be allowed. 

 11) Tattoos (permanent or temporary) must be covered and not visible to others. 

 12) Students attending graduation ceremonies or other school-sponsored activities shall be
       expected to meet dress code requirements. 

 13) Principals will have the discretion to designate alternative dress code guidelines for special
       occasions such as Prom, Coronation or other activities/events that occur during the school
       year.
 
Students electing to participate in any UIL, extra-curricular, or school sponsored activities must meet reasonable dress and grooming specifications prescribed by the teacher, coach, sponsor, or director of the course or activity. Some examples of these activities are U.I.L. competitive activities, such as band, speech, choir, drama, all team sports, and career and technology courses. 

The building principal, in cooperation with the sponsor, coach, or other person in charge of an extracurricular activity, will regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity. Students who violate those standards will be removed or excluded from the activity for a period determined by the building principal or sponsor and may be subject to other disciplinary action.
